For sub category page, in app/design/frontend/Your Interface/layout/catalog.xml change columns value the following line :4For root category page, in app/design/frontend/Your Interface/template/catalog/product/list.phtml find the following code in “Grid Mode” section and change with appropiate value :getColumnCount(); ?>like

Expires also helps a lot with speeding up Magento because of the quantity of connections that are made. If you're not using Expires or your Host doesn't enable them, then each object still has to make a call back to the server to check even though the server will respond with a 304 Not Modified, there's the connection time / wait for this to occur.
